Doctors Conlon, Bruksch, Ozment, Richard, VanOven, and Fay provide a full range of oral & maxillofacial surgery services, from diagnosis to surgery. They are qualified Diplomates of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

What is Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery?

This surgery specialty involves both dental and medical education, giving our Doctors the ability to manage both functional and aesthetic problems with the teeth, jaws, mouth, and facial bones. Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery involves the diagnosis and surgical management of diseases, soft and hard tissue defects, injuries and deformities involving the mouth, jaws, teeth and facial bones.

The education required to integrate these disciplines of Dentistry and Medicine is extremely rigorous. Four years of college are followed by another six or more years of dental and medical school. The doctors must complete an intensive, postdoctoral hospital-based surgical residency. Graduate Medical Evaluation requires the doctors to spend a significant amount of time rotating through hospital services, including Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Head and Neck Surgery, Neurosurgery, Trauma Surgery, Anesthesia, and Radiology.

What is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery?

Upon graduation, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon is qualified to practice. However, board certification is a marker of a specialist who is recognized by his peers as having achieved the highest standards within the profession.

A Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is exactly the same as being “Board Certified”. This title is acquired with a great deal of dedication and hard work above and beyond the regular educational program of an oral surgeon.

The board certification process requires the oral and maxillofacial surgeon to undergo a series of requirements and examinations in order to acquire board certification status. The first requirement is submission of cases covering a broad area of surgical expertise. The second hurdle is an intensive written examination, and the third level is a lengthy oral examination. The status of “board certified” is evidence that the oral surgeon has met the highest requirements of competence within the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Diplomates are re-certified in current competency every ten years by a comprehensive written examination.

What types of surgery are the OMS Doctors certified to perform?

Our Doctors perform biopsies and extractions, such as wisdom teeth removal, and they utilize dental implants to replace missing teeth or to stabilize dentures. Other procedures include bone grafting, correcting cleft lip and palate, TMJ disorders, and orthognathic (jaw) surgery. They can diagnose skin cancer, perform mole removal, and also offer facial rejuvenation procedures Botox® and Juvéderm®.

Our procedures can be performed under I.V. Sedation or local and general anesthesia within our comfortable office setting. Patients are continually monitored by qualified staff during and after surgery.
